Richard Susskind, author and Special Adviser to the CBA, will share his views on ‘Transformation, change, or business as usual – the future of law firms’.  Mr. Susskind’s book The End of Lawyers? challenges lawyers to rethink how their services are delivered.  He will expand on these thoughts and propose a path for change. Panelists will have an opportunity to offer their opinions, perspectives and challenges to these proposed approaches.

Expert speakers will offer practical strategies, challenging discussions and insight to the current climate for law firms.  Bruce MacEwen, President of Adam Smith Esq. LLC in New York, will delve into the ‘Great Economic Reset’, offering a path to providing impeccable client service, and challenges to the billable hour.

A panel focusing on how to ‘Internally Drive to Externally Thrive’ will offer perspectives from those who are responsible for dealing with numerous management challenges on a full-time basis.   Topics such as pressures to control costs, conflicts of interest and claims management will be discussed. 

Also on the agenda: ‘Mousetrap 2.0? - Guiding Principles for the modern, win-win law firm/client relationship’, featuring Richard Hall and Paul Lippe.  You will hear from clients, law firm leaders and advisers to help clarify the principles that will be the cornerstone of a successful future law firm.  You will be challenged to rethink the way firms operate in the context of the new client reality.  Topics of discussion will include the client engagement model, financing and capital, outsourcing and deconstruction, Web 2.0 and much more.

PRE-CONFERENCE

MEETING THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE I – BOOT CAMP FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED MANAGING PARTNERS & GROUP LEADERS

November 15th, 2009
(full day program) 

Last year’s full day of workshops and collaborative learning opportunities were so well received, that we are offering the Stage I program again for those who missed it. 

Join Karen MacKay and Richard Pearson of Phoenix Legal for this highly interactive workshop which provides participants with an opportunity to increase their knowledge, raise their self awareness and hone their skills through a combination of presentation and group discussion.  By the end of the program, participants will understand the unique challenges of law firm leadership; appreciate the distinction between leadership and management; and have a greater appreciation of their own individual strengths.  Participants receive the benefit of 2 personal diagnostics, one-on-one debriefing sessions and leave with many materials and tools they can use immediately in their firms.

POST-CONFERENCE

MEETING THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE II: MANAGING PROFITABILITY AND CHANGE – ADVANCED PROGRAM FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED MANAGING PARTNERS & GROUP LEADERS

November 17th, 2009 (afternoon) and November 18th, 2009 (morning)

New this year, is a Stage II program facilitated by Karen MacKay and Richard Pearson of Phoenix Legal, which will be offered at the end of the main conference (two half-day sessions).  This second session will focus on Managing Profitability and Change – and is an advanced program for new and experienced managing partners & group leaders. This second workshop provides participants with an opportunity to increase their knowledge of profit models and the levers of profitability, raise their industry awareness and effectively manage change.  By the end of the program, participants will understand the unique challenges facing law firm profitability; recognize the distinctions between different profitable structures and their relevance to various areas of practice; be able to recognize complacency and create a sense of urgency; and initiate and effectively manage change.
