Each year, the Canadian Bar Association British Columbia Branch (CBABC) selects one student from the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia (UBC) to receive a $4,000 award. The award recipient is someone who exemplifies the best ideals that are served by the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), which include:
- participation in activities that support members of the profession and law students;
- promotion of justice and law reform;
- promotion of equality among members of the profession and law students; and
- a demonstration of exemplary public or community service.
In 2008, Peggy Lee was selected as the law student from UBC who demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the ideals of the CBA.
Ms Lee was a Board Member at Bethune House Women’s Refuge in Hong Kong for more than seven years where she spearheaded the Para-Legal and Human Rights Education programs for migrant workers. In Canada, she has researched family law reform in British Columbia as part of a West Coast LEAF and UBC Centre for Feminist Legal Studies joint project. These are just a few of the experiences that exemplify Ms Lee’s commitment to the promotion of justice and law reform and have helped her to deepen her understanding of the interplay between law and society. She is committed to using the law to advance social justice, law reform and equality. Her extensive community involvements have demonstrated her dedication to supporting members of the profession and law students. These involvements include:
- interning at South Africa’s “Triangle Project” where she researches human rights violations on homophobic hate crime and violence against lesbian women in South Africa
- coordinating UBC Law Students of Colour United
- executive membership at UBC’s Social Justice Action Network
- membership in the UBC Women and Law Caucus and Outlaws
Ms Lee is the past recipient of:
- The Anna Wu Prize in Human Rights
- The Law Foundation Entrance Scholarship
- The Pam Baker Scholarship in Human Rights
Ms Lee's actions have shown great dedication to the community, and clearly demonstrate the values and ideals of the CBA.
The CBA Law Student Award was presented to Ms Lee at the UBC/CBA Mentorship Reception that was held on October 27, 2008. We wish to thank the many lawyers and law students who participated in the Mentorship Program.
The Canadian Bar Association Financial Services Corporation Law School Achievement Award was won by Aileen Smith who was not present at this year's ceremony.
