The Law Foundation of British Columbia

New Projects Funding
The Law Foundation of British Columbia has a budget of $215,000 available in June 1999 for new projects. To be eligible for funding, a project must fall within one or more of the five program objectives of the Foundation: legal aid; legal education; law reform; law libraries or legal research. The proposal must be for a time limited project only. There are no funds available for ongoing services in the community. The maximum amount available for each project is $15,000.

Deadline for Applications: Monday, March 22, 1999

Please contact Law Foundation staff at 604.688.2337 to discuss your project prior to submitting your application. Application guidelines may be obtained from the Law Foundation at Suite 1340 - 605 Robson Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 5J3.

Grants Approved
The Law Foundation approved funding totalling $4,268,391 at its meeting on November 21, 1998.

Renewal funding totalling $4,148,632 was approved for the following 20 programs:

  • BC Coalition of People With Disabilities (Advocacy Access Program 1999) - $124,464
  • BC Courthouse Library Society (In addition to the Operating Grant of $2,050,200 approved in June 1998, $135,000 was budgeted for 1999 to assist in long-term strategic planning)
  • BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association (Law Reform/Public Legal Education Program 98/99) - $18,900
  • BC Human Rights Coalition (Human Rights Advocacy and Education Project 98/99) - $100,000
  • Debate and Speech Association of BC (Law Foundation Cup Debates 1999) - $13,000
  • Downtown Eastside Residents’ Association (Advocacy Services Project 1999) - $93,946
  • Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (Legal Advocate Program 99/2000) - $27,000
  • Greater Vancouver Law Students’ Legal Advice Program (Operating 98/99) - $110,005
  • Law Foundation Lay Advocacy Education and Training Fund (1999) - $31,450
  • Law Courts Education Society (Northern Public Legal Education Programs for First Nations Communities 99/2000) - $55,250
  • Legal Services Society (Operating 99/2000) - $2,975,000
  • (In addition to the Operating Grant of $2,975,000 approved in November 1998, $200,000 was budgeted for 1999 to assist with the Year 2000 Computer Project)
  • North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre Society - Port Hardy (Poverty Law Advocacy Program 99/2000) - $45,767
  • University of British Columbia, Faculty of Law (Graduate Fellowships 99/2000) - $54,400 (Entrance Awards 99/2000) - $12,250 (Undergraduate Scholarships 99/2000) - $26,350 (Projects Grant 1999) - $20,000 (First Nations Clinical Program 99/2000) - $59,500
  • University of Victoria, Faculty of Law (Entrance and Renewal Scholarships 99/2000) - $26,350 (Projects Grant 1999) - $20,000

Funding totalling $119,759 was approved for the following 12 new legal projects:

  • Aboriginal Women’s Action Network (Bill C-31 Research) - $15,000
  • Alzheimer Society of BC (Regional Advocacy Training Workshops) - $14,800
  • BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health (Research into the Therapeutic Consequences of Compensation Claims by Victims of Sexual Abuse) - $12,360
  • British Columbia Council of Administrative Tribunals Training Program for Administrative Tribunal Members) - $4,590
  • Change of Seasons Society (Family Violence Resource Material and Workshops for Aboriginal Communities) - $5,192
  • Cowichan Spirit of Women’s Resource Society (Legal Education Project) - $500
  • Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre (Legal System Education Project) - $15,000
  • North Island Advocacy Coalition (BC Benefits: Legal Education Workshops) - $4,317
  • Urban Native Youth Association (Aboriginal Street Youth and the Criminal Justice System Research Project) - $15,000
  • Volunteer Vancouver (Volunteers and the Law, third edition) - $15,000
  • Watari Research Association (Child and Youth Protection Strategy) - $3,000
  • West Coast Leaf Association (Equality Rights Forum) - $15,000
