 Lawyers for Literacy

The Lawyers for Literacy Project is an initiative of the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch. The project is designed to assist lawyers with their client communications, particularly when their client's literacy skills are not adequate to deal with written material.

The Project, funded by Human Resources Development Canada, National Literacy Secretariat, carries out the recommendations of the 1992 Canadian Bar Association Task Force on Legal Literacy. The Task Force identified the need to increase lawyers' awareness of literacy issues and their ability to adjust communications practices to fit the reading abilities of their clients.

We hope you find this information useful and that it assists you to deliver legal services to clients facing a literacy challenge or other communication problem. We welcome your feedback and are pleased to answer your inquiries. For more information, call the BC Branch at 604.687.3404 or toll free in BC at 1.888.687.3404.
