Sharon Matthews
President

Sharon combines a practice focussing on aviation cases, product liability cases and class actions with volunteer work in the legal community.  Sharon is a partner with Camp Fiorante Matthews Mogerman and acts for plaintiffs in aviation and product liability cases and on class actions.  In addition to several years of involvement with the CBA, in both provincial and national roles, In addition to her practice, Sharon volunteers as a roster lawyer for Pro Bono BC, and is a member of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia.  Read more.
 

 

Kerry L Simmons
Vice President

Kerry practices at Cook Roberts LLP where she assists clients with family law and civil litigation disputes. Called to the Bar in 2000, Kerry has been a member of Provincial Council as a Section Chair from 2001 to 2007 and as an Elected Member for Victoria County since 2007. She was the Young Lawyers Representative from 2008 to 2010. Kerry is also a Sessional Instructor at the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria teaching Civil Procedure and Drafting. Among her professional and community contributions, she is the Chair of the Inquiry Committee of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia. Read more.

 

Stephen G McPhee

Stephen began his legal career in South Africa and was called there in 1997. His law degree was earned at the University of Stellenbosch, situated in the heart of the South African wine lands, which makes his successful academic performance there even more impressive. He immigrated to Canada in 1997, obtained his Canadian legal accreditation in 2000, and was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2002. Stephen is a partner with Ramsay Lampman Rhodes in Nanaimo and practices general commercial and civil litigation, personal injury and family law. Dean Crawford
Secretary-Treasurer
Dean is a Partner in the Vancouver office of Heenan Blaikie LLP. His practice has a particular focus on employment law, where he has considerable experience in wrongful dismissal litigation, executive compensation issues, enforcement of restrictive covenants, employment contracts and human rights. A former political assistant to Canada’s Minister of Justice and Minister of Health, Dean also carries out a government relations and regulatory practice. He has extensive experience representing clients in the pharmaceutical and health care sectors and frequently provides analysis and advice on government policy initiatives and regulatory reform. Read more.

 

Clint Sadlemyer
Officer

Clint practices exclusively in the area of Criminal law with his partners at King Sutton Sadlemyer.  He was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1993 and has remained in Nanaimo throughout his career.  Clint is an active volunteer and is currently in his fourth term as President of the Nanaimo County Bar Association. Clint is an active volunteer and sits on the CBA Provincial Council, is a member of the Legal Services Society Criminal Tariff Committee and the Law Day Committee for Nanaimo. In addition, he is Chair of the CBABC Court Services Committee and was an Officer on the CBABC 2009-2010 Executive Committee. Read more.

 

Alex Shorten

Alex recently completed a contract as Senior Associate Counsel at Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP and has 24 years of experience working in senior legal and management positions for forest products and construction companies combined with 14 years in private practice.  Alex has also been a managing partner of a mid-sized Vancouver law firm.  Alex obtained his BA in 1967 and his JD in 1972 from the University of Saskatchewan.  Alex was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1973.  His practice includes mergers and acquisitions, competition law, forestry and construction law. Mark Slay
Officer

Mark obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University in 1980. He graduated from the University of Victoria Law School in 1983 and was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1984. Mark restricts his practice to litigation, specifically in the area of family, estate, criminal and insurance law matters. He has appeared at all the levels of Court in British Columbia. In the area of criminal law, he continues to act discreetly for clients charged in various matters including impaired driving cases. He has been retained on an ad hoc basis to act as Crown Counsel in prosecution matters for many years. Read more.

 

Jasroop Grewal
Young Lawyers Representative
Jasroop is an associate at Pacific Law Group in Vancouver.  He practices civil litigation with a focus on personal injury, family and immigration law.  He was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2009.  Jasroop obtained a BA (Psychology) from University of British Columbia, and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a LLB in 2008.  Among his professional and community contributions, he is the Chair of the CBA Young Lawyers – Okanagan Section and a board member of the South Asian Family Association. Read more.

Caroline Nevin brings to her position more than 25 years of experience in communications, business and association management in British Columbia and Alberta. Committed to excellence in association management, Caroline has earned a Masters of Business Administration, the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) designation of Certified Association Executive as well as a Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Athabasca University.
