Message from the Chair

  • November 06, 2019

Dear Section members,

Despite the breathtaking diversity of municipal law practice, the communities we serve from coast to coast are often bound by common concerns. Our Section provides a rare national forum in local government practice to share our collective wisdom on common issues.

The Section will hold its annual executive meeting in Ottawa Spring 2020. This is a great opportunity for the Executive to share developments both in the law and with local Section activities, to liaise with representatives of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and to debrief on last year’s activities and plan for this year’s projects.

Existing projects we are very excited about include the Homelessness: Legal Guide for Municipalities grappling with homelessness and accessible housing, and the upcoming Guide for Municipal Lobbying.

The Section has always been actively creating and promoting professional development programs to benefit our members, and we have recently formed a Professional Development Committee. Members are encouraged to participate in the work of the PD Committee to devise and implement programming.

Outreach to law students and young lawyers is one of the Section’s priorities. We recently established a Student/Young Lawyers Initiative Committee whose projects include two planned “lunch and learn events” in 2020 at two law schools (one in the east, one in the west) to introduce students to municipal law.

We are always looking for articles on municipal law topics to publish in Town Hall. Please visit the webpage to find articles of interest, and send us an email if you would like to contribute.

Finally, please spread the word to your municipal law colleagues to join our Section adn take part in all these great activities!

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

Philip Huynh
