Happy New Year! We extend our warmest welcome back to everyone and are delighted to share some exciting news as we kick off the year.

Chair Appointed to CITT

Susana Lee, Partner at Cassidy Levy Kent LLP, has been appointed a Member of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, effective January 29, 2024. This appointment is by the Governor General in Council for a term of 5 years. This prestigious appointment reflects Susana’s experience, expertise, and unwavering commitment to international law.

Over many years, Susana has been extremely active in our Section, serving as Member-at-Large, Communications Officer, Secretary, Vice Chair, and finally as our Chair.

We are delighted to congratulate Susana and wish her all the best as she embarks on her new endeavour.

Student Essay Contest Winner and Call for Submissions!

The Section is pleased to announce Henry Off as the winner of the inaugural CBA International Law Section Student Essay Contest for the paper “Translating Intent and the Concept of Desire in International Criminal Law”. Henry Off is a lawyer based in Toronto. He specializes in human rights and criminal law both domestically and internationally. All views expressed in the article are solely that of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of his employers.

We are now accepting submissions for the CBA International Law Section Student Essay Contest! The award is presented annually for the best English or French scholarly paper received by the submission date on a subject relating to public international law, transnational law, and cross-border matters in Canada.

The submission deadline for this year’s contest is May 2, 2024. Details on the contest criteria and eligibility are available.

Update on Stakeholder Meetings

Trade Law Bureau at Global Affairs Canada

Our annual meeting with the Trade Law Bureau at Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is scheduled for March 27, 2024. Stay tuned for more information and registration details.

Sanctions Policy and Operations Coordination Division of GAC

The Sanctions Working Group held meetings with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) in Toronto and Ottawa in 2023 to follow up on the bar’s requests for guidance.

We are looking to plan more meetings with GAC to press for guidance on these key matters. GAC has not been able to confirm a date but expects to do so early in 2024. Details of meetings will be announced on our Section listserv when confirmed.

The Editorial Board is currently looking for submissions for the 2024 edition. We encourage authors to send articles on any topic that may be of interest to Canadian practitioners of international law.
