Welcome from the Chair

  • September 01, 2019

Chris WirthAs we embark on a new year of Section activities, I must take the opportunity to thank our past Chair, Jonathan Coady, for his leadership and commitment to the CBA. Under Jonathan’s tireless leadership, our Section has had a very successful year.

I am pleased to report that the CBA Administrative Law Section continues to be busy with a number of new initiatives. For example, the Section contributes to national policy, comments on proposed legislation and offers a variety of continuing legal education options to our members. We encourage you to visit our Section webpage to learn more about these exciting opportunities and to meet our new 2019/2020 Executive.

The executive remains committed to our number one priority: you. As a Section, we will continue to focus on delivering value to our members.

Our member communications, via the CBA Admin Law Insider, has been a success and will continue. Throughout the year, the Insider delivers pan-Canadian content to our members on interesting cases and emerging issues in administrative law. We hope that the Insider will serve as a hub for legal developments across Canada and for the exchange of ideas among our members. If you would like to submit content for a future edition, contact us. You can also contribute articles on administrative law under the Section’s commentary banner Intra Vires. This is a great opportunity for lawyers to give back to the profession and get published.

We will be continuing our partnership with the Laskin Moot Competition, which has also proven to be a positive one. Each year, Section members from our local CBA branches participate in practice sessions for student moot teams at law schools across the country. We plan to continue this partnership. As a Section, we are always interested in finding new ways to strengthen our relationship with law students and young lawyers interested in administrative law. If you have additional ideas, do not hesitate to contact us.

This month, our Section is hosting a Webinar on the Law of Lobbying (September 10). I hope that many of you will participate in this session.

On November 8-9 in Ottawa, we will be holding our 20th annual CBA Administrative Law and Labour and Employment Law Conference. Each year, lawyers, law professors, tribunal members and judges from across the country attend this diverse and well-respected program. I look forward to seeing you there. If you have any suggestions for future topics or speakers, let us know.

Last, please recruit colleagues to join our Section as they will receive the CBA Admin Law Insider communications going forward.

I look forward to hearing from you.
