Law Day 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Originated by the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and first held in Canada in 1983, Law Day is a national event celebrating the signing of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms on April 17, 1982. The purpose of Law Day is to promote amongst Canadians an increased awareness of their legal rights and obligations.
Law Day is celebrated annually in April and will be recognized on Tuesday, April 17th this year.
CBA Saskatchewan will be focusing on the following events for Law Day 2012:
LAW DAY MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION
The 13th annual McKercher Cup Mock Trial Competition for high school students is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2012. The mock trial recreates the dramatic centre of the justice system by allowing participants to play roles in trial, including prosecutor, defence counsel and witness. Such a "hands-on" learning activity provides students with the opportunity to learn the basic facts about court room procedures, rules of evidence and various legal concepts inherent in a criminal trial including "innocent until proven guuilty". The competition will take place at the Queen's Bench Court House in Saskatoon (520 Spadina Crescent East.

LAW DAY FUN RUN AND WALK
The 5th annual Law Day Run for the Law is open to everyone; bring your family, friends and colleagues.
Date: Saturday, April 21, 2012
Time: 11:00 a.m. (on site registration at 10:30 a.m.)
Place: Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench Court House (520 Spadina Crescent East)
Distances: 5 km Run or Walk (not timed)
Cost: Voluntary Contribution - All proceeds to CLASSIC and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan.
LAW DAY POSTER CONTEST
The Law Day Poster Contest is a great opportunity for Grade 5 students to learn and demonstrate an understanding of the rights of Canadians, including those specified in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Details of the contest, along with the Registration Form, can be found on the following link:
