Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

PavCo is currently seeking a contract Legal Counsel (3 month term) to join our leadership team to work in collaboration with senior management to identify and minimize legal risk.  The Legal Counsel will mitigate and manage impacts of all legal matters including but not limited to contractual agreements, litigation and other business transactions and will act as a liaison with external legal counsel.  The Legal Counsel is responsible for ensuring corporate compliance with current legal principles, practices and legislation.  Additionally, this role will be responsible for the review and preparation of all legal documents, communication and other applicable legal and non-legal documents. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies legal and regulatory risks, works closely with management to mitigate such risks within PavCo’s strategies
  • Ensure that all actions take account the likelihood of risk occurring and appropriate actions are taken to avoid it.
  • Co-ordinate and manage the approach to legal risk in assigned business departments.
  • Work closely with PavCo’s insurance broker and direct insurers to ensure proper management of risk and defence of legal claims, including renewal of annual policies and insurance agreements and oversight of external insurance counsel retained on PavCo’s behalf.
  • Review and provide legal advice either directly or through coordination with external counsel on contracts of various types relating to PavCo’s business interests, such as: license agreements with resident teams and Vancouver Convention Centre clients;  tenant leases; sponsorship  agreements; supplier agreements; development agreements with municipal government; indemnities; construction agreements; non-disclosure agreements, etc..
  • Prepares submissions and supporting affidavits for Inquiries before the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of BC (OIPC), including preparation and advocacy for Judicial Reviews, and submissions on behalf of PavCo for Investigations of the OIPC
  • Provide advice on and manage disputes and litigation pertaining to the Corporation, including advocacy in British Columbia Courts.
  • Provide legal direction and advice as requested to leadership


  • Law degree (LL.B or JD) and called to the bar in British Columbia
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Minimum 3 years of corporate commercial experience gained in a law firm or in-house position
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Self-directed, initiative and goal oriented
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills; multi-tasking; ability to self-manage competing priorities; meet tight deadlines and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently with little direction or supervision, and possess the ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects, and interact confidently and easily with business teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills both oral and written to communicate with both internal and external stakeholders
