Description

The Legal Services Division of The Regional Municipality of Halton (Halton Region), in co-operation with the Town of Oakville (Town) and the Halton Regional Police Service (Police), has established a unique Joint Articling Student Program and is currently seeking three (3) articling students for the 2020-2021 articling term. Each articling student will rotate between Halton Region, the Town, and the Police for up to a combined twelve (12) month articling term. This articling experience will appeal to those articling students interested in gaining a wide variety of legal experience in the area of municipal law.

Halton Region is an upper-tier municipality located at the western end of the Greater Toronto Area. It is comprised of four local municipalities, being the City of Burlington and the Towns of Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville and is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada. All articling placements during the articling term will be located at the Halton Region, Town and Police offices, which are all located in Oakville, Ontario. Halton Region’s Legal Services Division boasts a strong legal team headed by the Acting Commissioner of Legislative & Planning Services and Corporate Counsel, while the Town’s Legal Department is under the direction of the Town Solicitor and the Police Legal Services Department is led by the Director, Legal Services.

Your articling experience will provide practical legal training in barrister and solicitor tasks in many areas of law including municipal law, employment and labour law, planning law, real estate, civil litigation, provincial prosecutions, privacy law and administrative law. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients as you experience the challenges and rewards of practicing law in the public sector.

Halton Region offers a competitive salary and a collegial, professional work environment. Interested candidates are requested to forward their resume and transcripts, with a brief cover letter to the attention of Vito Cairone, to be received before 5 p.m. on September 27, 2019.
