CBA-Yukon deeply saddened by passing of Melissa Atkinson

WHITEHORSE – February 15, 2019 – The Yukon Branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA-Yukon) is deeply saddened by the passing of tireless volunteer and branch leader Melissa Atkinson.

“Melissa brought an incredibly important voice to the CBA-Yukon. Her involvement made the organization a more understanding, diverse and professional Association. She was a model of integrity and professional excellence to all members. Her deep sense of humanity and dignity for all touched many people at the CBA, both in Yukon and across Canada” says CBA-Yukon President Jessica Lott Thompson.

Melissa Atkinson has been actively involved with the CBA over the past two decades. She served as President of the Yukon Branch and National Board member in 2008/9 and 2016/17. During her time as President Melissa respectfully and impactfully brought forward the voice of Yukon members to the National CBA.

Throughout her time as a CBA member, Melissa also served as a Chair of CBA-Yukon Women Lawyers, Criminal Justice Law, Young Lawyers and Aboriginal Law. Most recently Melissa served on the Truth and Reconciliation Task Force of the National CBA.

Melissa’s passing is deeply saddening for the CBA-Yukon. Her professional impact and her personal kindness throughout her time with the organization touched many members. Her volunteer involvement with this organization will remain an inspiration for those currently practicing law as well as new members.
