ABORIGINAL COURTS are popping up across the country, including a pilot project in the Lower Mainland, and for Law Day this Friday, you can learn more about them.
Karen Whonnock, a family lawyer here, will talk about aboriginal courts, which is part of the doctorate of social sciences degree she's working on through Royal Roads University in Victoria.
The New Westminster First Nations court, a pilot project, has a zero recidivism rate during its nearly four years in existence, she says.
A Haida or Nisga'a court might be here in the future and would be a good idea, she believes.
Whonnock will give her presentation on aboriginal courts at the courthouse this Friday, April 16. For more details, see Community Events on page 18.
