Phil Fontaine, National Chief of the Assemblyof First Nations, has been a powerful force innative politics since the 1970s, having orchestratedseveral key deals designed to improve thequality of life for Indiginous people. Since first being elected National Chief in 1997, Phil Fontaine has been a leader in the advancement of First Nations issues, urging governments to ease Aboriginal poverty and to work harder to settle more than 1,100 outstanding land claims. National Chief Fontaine has been a unifying force among First Nations and has brought the message of Indigenous peoples to the international stage.
