OTTAWA – Scott Jolliffe, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP in Toronto, has been selected as the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) 2009 Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence. The award recognizes distinguished and exceptional service that meets the goals and objectives of the Association.
“Against the backdrop of a challenging career, Scott has demonstrated his dedication to the CBA and is a steadfast ambassador of the Association. When asked to chair the CBA’s Conflicts of Interest Task Force, he led a blue-ribbon committee through a process that produced a comprehensive report that sets the gold standard on the subject,” said CBA Past-President Guy Joubert of Winnipeg.
Willing to take on complex and daunting tasks, Mr. Jolliffe has the leadership ability to muster the support of volunteers to complete work in a tight time frame. Among his many Association involvements, Mr. Jolliffe most recently chaired the CBA Conflicts of Interest Task Force, which led to the publication of its definitive report released in August 2008. The report, described as a seminal contribution to the practice of law in Canada by the CBA, was unanimously supported by the CBA.
“Thanks to the work of Scott Jolliffe and the Task Force, the CBA has now completed its revision of the Code of Professional Conduct to include the changes on conflicts of interest,” says Mr. Joubert. The revised Code will be available on the CBA website in December.
First and foremost a litigator, Mr. Jolliffe is recognized as one of Canada’s pre-eminent trial and appellate lawyers in intellectual property and technology law. His areas of specialization include patent, trademark, copyright, high-tech and product liability litigation.
Mr. Jolliffe completed his law studies at Queen’s University and Osgoode Hall, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978. He obtained his Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Toronto in 1973.
The 2009 CBA Louis St-Laurent Award, which takes the form of a bronze statue of the former prime minister, will be presented at the CBA Awards Ceremony and Reception on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, in the Sovereign Room at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. The event is open to accredited media. Please contact Hannah Bernstein for accreditation.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
