Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP Christa C. Wessel, is a Partner in the Business Law Group of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP. Called to the bar in 1986, Christa has extensive experience in a variety of transactions in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, project development and commercial transactions, as well as business and tax driven reorganizations. She acts for a wide range of Canadian and foreign corporations, both public and private and has extensive experience in the energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and health care sectors in local and international business environments. As a leader in Gowlings International Business Ethics & Anti-corruption Practice Group, Christa’s practice also focuses on governance, compliance and the prevention of economic crime. Christa was a partner with a major Canadian law firm prior to joining Siemens Canada Limited in 2002 as it’s first General Counsel and Regional Compliance Officer. During her time at Siemens, Christa built a world-class legal department that was nominated and short listed for an ILO (International Law Office) Award, acknowledged with a “Special Award for Excellence in Strategic Partnerships” in recognition of the Legal department’s business focused approach and evaluated by executive management with the highest rating for customer satisfaction. The Legal department was also recognized as one of Canada’s “innovative legal departments” by the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association magazine in its August 2008 issue. Having served as the Regional Compliance Officer for 5 years while at Siemens, Christa applies her in-house, hands-on experience developing and implementing highly effective front-line corporate governance and compliance programs, policies and standards Christa has been involved in a variety of community initiatives and has served on several boards. She served as a member of the board of Siemens Canada Limited as well as several of its Canadian affiliates. She has also served on the board of Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc. and chaired its Strategic Direction Committee. Christa also served on, and was Chair of, the Board of Governors of Halton Healthcare Services Corporation and chaired the Transition Committee, guiding the amalgamation of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial and Milton District Hospitals. She also chaired its Governance and Strategic Planning Committees and served as a member of the board of Oakville Christian School and co-chaired its Capital Campaign Committee. Other community involvement includes acting as a Lecturer/Case Study Coach at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Art of the Deal course for MBA/LLB students, as Chair of a law firm’s United Way Campaign and as a Member of the Advisory Board of the Canadian Policy Research Networks’ Non-Profit Sector Study. Christa has recently been awarded the designation of Chartered Director by The Directors College, McMaster University, and intends to continue serving on a variety of diverse boards of directors. |
