Monday, August 17, 9:30 – 12:00

Presented by Young Lawyers-CBA and the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute

A first time appearance before the Supreme Court of Canada can be a daunting prospect. To help relieve some of the jitters, this year’s Winning Advocacy Skills program offers basic information and useful tips to help counsel refine their arguments and familiarize themselves with the general proceedings of the highest Court.

The session opens with a simulated oral argument presented by counsel. Following the oral presentation, the panel - composed of a former Supreme Court Justice and experienced counsel - will openly discuss the merits of the submission, offer constructive criticism and feedback, and then suggest how counsel can be most effective. The program will close with audience participation in a question and answer period.

While the focus is on first time counsel, this program will be of interest to all who have appeared or might in the future appear before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Panellists:

The Hon. Peter de Carteret Cory, C.C., C.D.
Senior Advisor
