OTTAWA – Privacy and Access Rights in the Age of Technology – The State of Canadians’ Information Rights in 2010 and Beyond, is the theme of the 2010 Canadian Bar Association (CBA) fall symposium on privacy and access law, taking place Sept. 19-20 at the Sheraton Ottawa Hotel, as part of Right to Know Week.
The opening plenary highlights the program. “The Past Year in Review will provide a unique opportunity to hear four federal and provincial Privacy and Access Commissioners discuss the challenges and recent developments that they have addressed over the past year and a half,” says David Fraser, Chair of CBA’s National Privacy and Access Law Section.
Moderated by Gary Dickson, Q.C., Information and Privacy Commissioner of Saskatchewan, the panel features Jennifer Stoddart, Privacy Commissioner of Canada; Suzanne Legault, Information Commissioner of Canada; Frank Work, Q.C., Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta; and Jacques Saint-Laurent, Chair, Access to Information Commission of Quebec. The session takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 20.
“This year’s conference brings together an impressive roster of regulators and access administrators from the federal and provincial governments to discuss the challenges posed by new technologies and global developments on privacy and access,” says conference co-chair Mandy Woodland, of Cox & Palmer. Issues of privacy on the internet and consumer rights in an electronic health system are pushing the boundaries of existing legislation,” adds conference co-chair Steven Seiferling, of McKercher LLP.
The symposium is part of Right to Know (RTK) Week, which raises awareness about people’s right to access government information while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance. Details about Right to Know Week can be found online.
The two-day program is open to accredited media. Please contact Hannah Bernstein for accreditation. Full program details are available on the CBA website.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
