NIAGARA – Louise Bélanger-Hardy and Aline Grenon of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, common law section, were named winners of the 2010 Walter Owen Book Prize in recognition of outstanding new contributions to Canadian legal literature.

Prof. Bélanger-Hardy and Prof. Grenon are the editors of the monograph “Éléments de common law canadienne: comparaison avec le droit civil québécois,” which was chosen unanimously by the selection committee.

“This volume is a wonderful addition to legal scholarship in Canada, a serious and engaging exploration of the common law for a civil law audience,” said Jean Leclair, Professor of Law at the University of Montreal, a member of the 2010 jury.

“The book is beautifully written, and is the product of careful conception of the project in form and in substance. In its contribution to civil law/common law dialogue, it also connects very nicely with the mission of the CBA and the Foundation for Legal Research,” said Daniel Boyer, Head Law Librarian, McGill University, another member of the jury.

An Associate Professor with the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa, Prof. Bélanger-Hardy, B.A., B. Sc. Soc., LL.B. (Ottawa), LL.M. (University College London), is a member of the University’s School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. She specializes in torts and health law. She is also interested in comparative law, legal drafting and university pedagogy.

Prof. Bélanger-Hardy was Vice-Dean from 1995 to 1999. She has won numerous Common Law Students’ Association awards for teaching excellence.

Prof. Grenon, B.A., LL.B., D.E.S.S. (Paris I), is a Full Professor. A member of the Ontario and Quebec Bars, she has been part of the French Program faculty since 1990.

Prof. Grenon’s current research is devoted to Canadian bijuralism, as well as to trusts and securities, as seen from a comparative law perspective and, in particular, from the perspective of the Civil Code of Québec.

The Walter Owen Book Prize, awarded by the Foundation for Legal Research, is designed to recognize excellent legal writing and to reward outstanding new contributions to Canadian legal literature that enhance the quality of legal research in this country. The award takes the form of a $10,000 cash prize funded by the Foundation for Legal Research.

The award will be presented at the Council Awards Luncheon on Saturday, August 14, at 12:30 p.m., at the Sheraton on the Falls, Great Room C. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the CBA 2010 Canadian Legal Conference and Expo in Niagara from August 15-17. The event is open to accredited media. Please contact Hannah Bernstein for accreditation.
