NIAGARA – Daniel A. MacRury, Q.C., Chief Crown Attorney for the Cape Breton Region of the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service, and Inquiry Counsel for the Hyde Fatality Inquiry, has been chosen as the winner of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) 2010 John Tait Award of Excellence. The award recognizes an outstanding Canadian public sector lawyer annually.

“Dan’s extraordinary skill in the law and the impressive range and depth of his volunteer commitment exemplify what is best about the legal profession,” says Julie M. Frederickson, Chair of the Public Sector Lawyers Forum. “Dan has demonstrated outstanding leadership through his significant involvement in mentoring and shaping future lawyers and through his tireless dedication to the community.” 

Mr. MacRury has practised criminal law both as a Crown and Defence Counsel for 24 years. Before joining the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service in 1996, he practiced primarily as defence counsel in the area of criminal law and family law with Nova Scotia Legal Aid. He was named Queen’s Counsel in 2005.

Mr. MacRury is incoming vice-chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the CBA and Treasurer of the CBA (Nova Scotia Branch). He is past president of the Canadian Criminal Justice Association, past president of the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia, and past chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the CBA (Nova Scotia Branch). He received the CBA (Nova Scotia Branch) Community Service Award in 2006.

Mr. MacRury has been involved in more than 30 Supreme Court judge-and-jury cases, including several murder cases. As a member of the Appeals division of the Nova Scotia Prosecution Service, he has appeared on numerous occasions in the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. He represented the Attorney General of Nova Scotia in the Supreme Court of Canada on three occasions including the case of R. V. Sharpe, the case which established the current law in relation to child pornography.

Mr. MacRury has been a member of the federal/provincial/territorial working group on cyber-crime since 2001. He was a member of the Canadian delegation to the 11th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, and he was elected vice-chair of the 2005 UN workshop on measures to combat computer-related crime.

Born and raised in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Mr. MacRury received his L.L.B. in 1985 from the University of New Brunswick and his B.A. from St. Francis Xavier University in 1982.

The John Tait Award of Excellence will be presented by the CBA’s Public Sector Lawyers Forum at a reception at the Crowne Plaza, King George room, on Monday, August 16, at 5:00 p.m. The reception is held in conjunction with the CBA 2010 Canadian Legal Conference and Expo in Niagara from August 15-17. The award was established in 1998 to honour, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of public sector lawyers in Canada. The award honours the memory of John Tait, an outstanding lawyer, public servant and friend of the CBA who passed away in the summer of 1999.
