OTTAWA – Paul Krugman, Nobel Laureate, economist, and New York Times columnist, is the keynote speaker at the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) Canadian Legal Conference, taking place in Niagara, Aug. 15-17, 2010.

“Known for his candour and engaging manner, this distinguished economist will share the trends and market forces that Canadians will be facing given the fluctuations of the U.S. economy,” says CBA President D. Kevin Carroll, Q.C. of Barrie, Ont. “This timely subject is of interest to our members as they identify and analyze influences that affect their law practice.”

Also headlining the conference are retired General Rick Hillier who speaks at the conference breakfast on Aug. 16, and Prof. Linda Duxbury of Carleton University who speaks at the Aug. 17 breakfast. Hillier will offer his unique perspectives on leadership as a 35-year veteran of the Canadian Forces. Duxbury will focus on how to manage a changing workforce as well as how to deal with generational differences in the workplace.

Richard Pound, Q.C., Olympic athlete, author and member of the International Olympic Committee will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the role of lawyers in the world’s largest and highest profile international event in his speech to the Closing Lunch on Aug. 17.

Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin addresses CBA Council, the Association’s policy-making body on Saturday morning, Aug. 14, at 9:50 a.m. She will hold a short question and answer session with media immediately after. During the balance of the Council meeting over the next day-and-a-half, the CBA will debate policy resolutions.

The Chief Justice will also speak at the opening plenary on Aug. 15. Keynote speaker is Dr. Paul Krugman. Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson will address CBA members, and then take their questions, on Monday, Aug. 16.

Concurrent professional development sessions take place on Aug. 16 and 17. The wide-ranging roster includes sessions on family law, small and solo firms, and cross-border issues. In addition are programs on privacy and linguistic rights. Some specifics include:

The Justicia Award for outstanding media coverage of legal issues will be presented at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 14. The Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award for outstanding service to the community will be presented at the closing luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

A ceremony to mark the transfer of the presidency from outgoing President D. Kevin Carroll, Q.C. to incoming President Rod Snow of Whitehorse takes place at the closing luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Programs take place at the Sheraton on the Falls and Crowne Plaza Fallsview Niagara. Sessions are open to accredited media. The Media Centre is located in Strategy Room 5 at the Sheraton on the Falls, with the Communications Office in Upper Fallsview A. Both will be open from noon, Friday, Aug. 13, until noon, Tuesday, Aug. 17.
