OTTAWA – Andrew Weafer of Kitchener, has won the 2010 Canadian Bar Association (CBA) National Military Law Section (NMLS) Law School, Sword & Scale Essay Prize. Mr. Weafer's essay deals with the use of tear gas under international law.
“The winning essay of the inaugural 2010 NMLS Law School Essay Contest is the product of thorough research coupled with fine writing skills,” said David McNairn, member of the jury, in announcing the award. “This paper's topic is highly relevant to the operational laws that guide the Canadian Forces in military operations."
Mr. Weafer recently completed his third year of a Juris Doctorate program at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario, majoring in Political Science. In 2010-2011, Mr. Weafer will be articling with the Ontario Crown Attorney in criminal law. He hopes to work in the field of criminal or public international law.
The NMLS Law School Essay Contest promotes and rewards interest in military law topics in Canadian law schools. The award consists of a monetary prize of $250, as well as paid registration to the NMLS annual conference in Ottawa on June 7, 2010. Mr. Weafer's essay will be published in NMLS’ electronic newsletter, the Sword & Scale.
