OTTAWA – The President of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), Kevin Carroll, Q.C. of Barrie, Ont., has announced that Annette Horst of The Pas, Manitoba, is acclaimed Treasurer of the CBA for a two-year term beginning September 2010.

“Annette brings a thorough knowledge and a decade of CBA experience to the Treasurer’s position,” says CBA President Kevin Carroll. “She understands the financial priorities of the Association given her experience serving as President of the Manitoba Bar Association, as National Chair of Young Lawyers-CBA, on the Finance Committee and on the Board of Directors.”

Annette Horst began her career articling with Legal Aid Manitoba at the Northland Community Law Centre in The Pas in the areas of criminal and family law. After her call, she practiced in Brandon for three years with Roy, Johnston & Co. with a general practice focusing on family law.

In 2002, Ms Horst returned to work for Legal Aid in The Pas and in January 2007 became the Supervising Attorney of the Northland Community Law Centre. Ms Horst has appeared in all levels of court in Manitoba, and successfully opposed a leave application to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Ms Horst became a member of the Manitoba Bar Association Council while practising in Brandon and continued her involvement from The Pas, joining the Executive Committee in 2006. She chaired the YL-CBA in 2006-2007. She served on the MBA Mid-Winter Organizing Committee for five years and is a past chair of the MBA Young Lawyers. Ms. Horst has been a Learning Group Facilitator for the Law Society of Manitoba bar course and currently sits on the Law Society of Manitoba’s Committee on Paralegals.

Annette Horst received her undergraduate degree from Brandon University in 1995 and her law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1998. She was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1999.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
