OTTAWA – The President of the Canadian Bar Association, Bernard Amyot of Montreal, says that Louis-Philippe de Grandpré will be remembered as a “pillar of the legal profession.”
“We are saddened by the death of a great jurist,” says the CBA President. “He was a role model for lawyers as a barrister, as president of CBA Quebec (1962-1963), as Batonnier of Montreal and later as Batonnier of Quebec, as National President of the Canadian Bar Association (1972-1973), and as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (1974-1977).”
As President of the CBA, in his August 1973 address, Mr. de Grandpré urged lawyers to “promote a healthy society that includes liberty, respect for the rule of law, and the promotion of values within our society.”
This view was reflected in his Montreal law practice and at the Supreme Court of Canada. His judgments dealt with criminal law, tax law and personal injury cases.
“He was a man of principle, an individual with a keen sense of public duty,” says CBA President Amyot.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
