The Foundation for Legal Research provides funds for legal research falling into three broad categories, namely:

  • Research and writing where the emphasis is on the statement of existing rules of law, sometimes referred to as doctrinal research;
  • Research with regard to the working of the legal system; and
  • Research with regard to development in fields peripheral to legal doctrine, such as criminology, psychology, psychiatry, sociology and economics and their relationship to rules of law.

The goal of the Foundation is to encourage legal writing that would be valuable to Canadian lawyers and judges in their day to day practice of law and in the administration of justice.

The Foundation was created in 1957.  It is supported by Life Fellows and members who are members of the profession across Canada who believe in the importance of legal research.

The Foundation's grants are normally in the range of $3,000-$4,000.  The Foundation does not reject applications for smaller amounts, but rarely makes larger grants because of the limited amount of money available.

Most applicants are law teachers in Canada seeking funding for summer research.

Applications must be post marked on or before March 1, 2008, and mailed to:

The Foundation for Legal Research
c/o the Law Foundation of British Columbia
605 Robson Street, suite 1340
Vancouver, B.C.  V6B 5J3

If a grant is authorized, the Foundation will expect progress reports at suitable intervals and a completion report accompanied by a copy of the resulting book, article, thesis, or as the case may be.  Recipients of grants should keep a complete account of the expenditures of their grant, and must submit a report on completion together with receipts wherever possible to the Foundation.
