OTTAWA—In a statement released today, Bernard Amyot, of Montreal, Vice-President of the Canadian Bar Association, called on the federal government to increase funding for legal aid.

“The Canadian Bar Association believes that legal aid is the key to the courthouse door,” says Bernard Amyot.  “For those without the economic means, that key is beyond their reach.  All of us – regardless of means - must be assured of effective and equal access to the judicial system when our fundamental interests are at stake.”

The full text of Mr. Amyot’s speech is available on the CBA website:

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
