ST. JOHN’S, NFLD. – Montreal corporate counsel Sylvie Grégoire and Robert Lebeau have been named as winners of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) 2006 Robert V.A. Jones Canadian Corporate Counsel Award.

Sylvie Grégoire has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association since 1986. For over 10 years, she has been actively involved with the CBA’s Quebec Branch as well as the national association, particularly with the CCCA since its inception in 1990. Sylvie served as CCCA vice-president in 2002-2003. She was a member of the CBA-Quebec Branch Executive for many years, and was co-chair of the 1996 CCCA Montreal organizing committee for the Canadian Legal Conference.

Sylvie Grégoire was a member of the Quebec Branch’s subcommittee on the landmark Wilson Report on Gender Equality in the Legal Profession and chair of its Standing Committee on Equality for many years. She received her law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1985, and her LL.M. from the University of Montreal in 1994. She currently serves as Director of Legal Services for McKesson Canada, a leading provider of logistics, distribution, and automation services to the Canadian health care field. Sylvie was named co-recipient of the CBA’s Louis St. Laurent Award of Excellence on Aug. 12.

Lebeau is vice-president and associate general counsel of Sun Life Financial, an international leader in the financial services industry. He joined Sun Life shortly after his admission to the Quebec Bar in 1971. Lebeau has been an active CCCA member, sitting on its executive committee in 1998-1999. He has organized and participated in numerous panels and discussions on the role and responsibilities of corporate counsel. He has also been a frequent speaker on the subject of ethical issues facing corporate counsel.

Since 1999, Lebeau has been president of the Comité juridique québécois of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, and was president of the Association of Corporate Secretaries and General Counsel of Québec in 2003. Lebeau has been a member of various Barreau du Québec committees where he has represented the perspective and interests of corporate counsel.

The Robert V. A. Jones Canadian Corporate Counsel Award recognizes an exceptional contribution to the development or promotion of the Canadian corporate counsel Bar or community. The award, named after Robert Jones, who served as the founding Executive Director of the CCCA for 11 years, will be presented at a ceremony taking place on Monday, Aug. 14 in Ballroom C of the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel in St. John’s, Nfld., site of the CCCA 18th Annual Meeting.

The CCCA Annual Meeting conference program focuses on the theme of Finding Safe Harbours: Charting Your Legal Course with Best Practices. It features workshops, keynote addresses and plenary sessions. Keynote speakers include Gen. Rick Hillier, chief of staff of the Canadian Forces, and the Hon. Clyde Wells, chief justice of the Newfoundland Supreme court and former premier of Newfoundland.

Established in 1988, the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association is a conference of the CBA. Its mission is to provide a national forum and voice for in house counsel to advance the development of their practice of law and enhance their professional skills and careers. The Association currently has a membership of more than 8,400.
