On May 8, 2009, President Miriam Maisonville stated “The members of the CBABC are deeply saddened on the passing of the Honourable Chief Judge Hugh Stansfield. The Chief Judge was a true leader in our Province. He believed in access to justice to all and was instrumental in establishing the new Community Court. He was a true believer in legal education and only days ago spoke at the CBABC Law Week Forum to the public demonstrating his usual courtesy, compassion for others, and his legal knowledge. He never failed to help educate - be it to encourage junior lawyers, judge high school students in legal moots, speak to County leaders from across the Province, the CBABC Provincial Council, the Media or his judicial colleagues at conferences.
Above all he will be remembered for his compassion, kindness and courage. Our deepest condolences go to his family his wife Jo-Ann and sons Colin, David, Patrick and Matthew. Our profession has suffered a true loss.“
