Merrill Leckie Wins Excellence Award Merrill Leckie, associate counsel with Watson Goepel Maledy of Vancouver, has been named the recipient of the 1998 Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence. The Louis St-Laurent Award recognizes distinguished or exceptional service to the goals of the CBA. “Mr. Leckie has provided the Canadian Bar Association with four decades of unfailing, selfless, distinguished and exceptional service,” says CBA Past President Andre P. Gervais, QC. “That services has earned him a solid reputation as an outstanding and active member of the CBA.”
Merrill Leckie practices corporate and commercial law, specializing in franchising and trademarks and is a chartered arbitrator who handles commercial arbitrations of all kinds, specializing in condominium arbitrations. Within the CBA, he has served as President of the BC Branch, Chair of the Taxation Section and Chair of the CBA 1979 Mid-Winter Meeting.
In 1986, Merrill Leckie chaired the CBA National Task Force on Structure and Operations. The culmination of the task force’s work, known as the “Leckie Report” was tabled in August 1987. The report provided 15 recommendations on the general operations, role and structure of all aspects of the CBA and its related organizations. As a direct result of the Leckie Report, the CBA has developed a new governance structure and a strong emphasis on Sections.
