The Law Foundation of British Columbia

Aboriginal Justice Issues Funding Initiative
The Law Foundation has established a fund of $600,000 to support one-time funding for initiatives designed to enable aboriginal people to meet their special justice needs; and/or to improve the legal system for aboriginal people. A project must fall within one or more of the Foundation’s statutorily mandated areas of legal education, legal research, law reform and legal aid. There is a two-stage application process:

Stage One
Applicants submit a Letter of Intent form with a brief description of the project and how it meets the initiative’s objectives.

Stage Two
A limited number of applicants will be invited to submit a formal grant application. Letters of Intent must be received (by hand, mail or fax) by the Foundation no later than 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 30, 1999. For more information, or to receive a Letter of Intent Form, contact the Foundation:

Grants Approved
The Law Foundation approved funding totalling $3,345,750 at its meeting on March 6, 1999. Renewal funding for the following 19 programs was approved:

  • BC Civil Liberties Association (Operating 1999/2000) - $122,088

  • British Columbia Law Institute (Operating 1999/2000) - $127,500
  • Community Legal Assistance Society (Operating 1999/2000) - $595,000
  • Continuing Legal Education Society (Professional Legal Training Course 1999/2000) - $212,500
  • End Legislated Poverty (FLAWline Public Legal Education Newsletter and Working Group 1999/2000) - $17,759
  • Golden Family Center (Legal Advocacy Project 1999/2000) - $46,382
  • Law Foundation Graduate Fellowships (1999/2000) - $50,000
  • Nelson and District Community Resources Society (Legal Advocacy Project 1999/2000) - $95,786
  • North Island Advocacy Coalition Society (Campbell River) (Legal Advocacy Program 1999/2000) - $76,930
  • People’s Law School Society (Operating 1999/2000) - $238,500
  • Separation and Divorce Resource Centre (Victoria) (Volunteer and Legal Support Services Program 1999/2000) - $36,900
  • Tenants’ Rights Action Coalition (Legal Advocacy Project 1999/2000) - $198,737
  • University of Saskatchewan (Native Law Centre - Program of Legal Studies and Operating 1999/2000) - $9,350
