Special Programs and New Members

by Jineane Payne, CBABC Database/Membership Coordinator

Going on parental leave? Unemployed and actively seeking employment? Facing unforeseen economic hardships or working in the public interest at greatly reduced income?

If you are currently a member in good standing whose membership fees were paid in full during the past membership year, you may be eligible to participate in one of the following Special Programs to help you retain CBA membership:

Birth/Adoption Benefit Program
The CBA’s Birth/Adoption Benefit Program is available to all CBA members on parental leave. Members in good standing may be eligible for a maximum credit of twelve months toward their membership fees.

Waiver of Dues Program
The Waiver of Dues program is available to all regular CBA members who are unemployed and actively seeking employment, or on a leave of absence due to illness or disability. Applicants whose CBA membership is in good standing may be eligible to have their fees waived for a period up to one year.

Members’ Special Circumstances Fund
The CBA’s Members’ Special Circumstances Fund was created in recognition of individual lawyers who occasionally undertake extraordinary work in the public interest at a greatly reduced income.

Members who take on work in the public interest and generate very minimal income can apply to this fund for the purposes of requesting the fund pay for their CBA membership fees for the year. The CBA applauds these individuals for their contribution to the legal profession and the public at large.

If you are interested in more information on any of our Special Programs, please contact the CBABC office or visit www.cba.org/CBA/membership to print off the eligibility requirements and application forms. Submit all application forms by mail to the Canadian Bar Association, 500-865 Carling Avenue, Ottawa ON, K1S 5S8 or send by fax to (613) 237-0185.
