Law Week 2012 - Access to Justice: Celebration of the Charter of Rights - Cranbrook

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 13, 2012

CRANBROOK, BC – The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, is pleased to announce Law Week 2012; a week of celebrations including mock trials, open houses, charity fun run, and a public speaking contest. Law Week is a national celebration of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an opportunity to learn more about the justice system; what the legal community does; and what legal resources are available.

This year’s theme, Celebration of the Charter of Rights, highlights the 30th anniversary of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights. The Charter has brought changes to laws that discriminate against people because of personal characteristics or prejudices. With the Charter, Canadian society has a clearer recognition of human rights and freedoms, and ways to enforce these rights.

Law Week 2012 includes events across Canada from April 15-22.

Cranbrook celebrates Law Day on Tuesday, April 17 at the Key City Theatre at 7pm. The mock trial is an excellent way for the general public to observe how an actual trial would happen, based on realistic fact patterns that a real jury is likely to hear. The jury is chosen at random from the audience, so everyone has the chance to be the judge. The mock trial will include:

  • A man charged with murdering his employer

  • Personal relationships and affairs

  • Photographic evidence

  • Police eye witnesses

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch will hold its province-wide “Dial-A-Lawyer Day” from 10am – 2pm. Residents in British Columbia are invited to call toll-free at 1.800.663.1919 to speak with a lawyer for up to 15 minutes at no cost in five different areas of law (Employment/Labour, Immigration, Family Law, Torts, and Wills/Estates/Trusts).

More information is available online at www.bclawweek.org. Law Week 2012 partners are the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Foundation of British Columbia, the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, Vancouver Bar Association, and Local County and Bar Associations.
