Vancouver – Last night, James D. Vilvang, Q.C., of the firm Richards Buell Sutton LLP, received one of the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch’s highest honours, the Georges A. Goyer, Q.C. Memorial Award for Distinguished Service. The award was presented by Sharon Matthews, President of the Canadian Bar Association – BC Branch (CBABC), at the 2011 Bench and Bar Dinner in Vancouver. CBABC Georges A. Goyer, Q.C. Memorial Award
The Goyer Award was created in 1992 to recognize exceptional contributions to the legal profession, to jurisprudence, or to the law in British Columbia. The award was established in memory of Georges A. Goyer, Q.C., a respected member of the BC Branch who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Vilvang, Q.C., a distinguished and recognized trial lawyer for over 30 years, was selected for his outstanding commitment to the legal profession. A tireless volunteer, Mr. Vilvang, Q.C. has served as President of the B.C. Branch of Canadian Bar Association (1988-1989), President of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia (1993-1994) and as a Bencher of the Law Society of B.C. (2002-2010).
CBABC President Sharon Matthews, who chaired this year’s selection committee, said “We are extremely pleased to bestow one of our most prestigious awards to such a deserving individual. Mr. Vilvang, Q.C. embodies the qualities which are emblematic of this Award – dedication to the law, the people of British Columbia and the legal profession.”
