The Award of Excellence celebrates the accomplishments of a woman who has succeeded in breaking new ground for women in the legal profession in British Columbia. The Award recognizes an exceptional woman who has taken risks, fostered change and ultimately opened doors for women lawyers. In this award we are not only celebrating the woman’s distinguished career achievements, but her outstanding contributions to women in the legal profession as a change agent, leader and mentor.
Last year when we awarded our first Award of Excellence, we honoured all five of the remarkable women lawyers who were nominated. Both last year and again this year, we had outstanding nominees - any one of whom could be the recipient of this award. After some consideration, the CBABC WLF Executive has decided that we will announce only the recipient of the award and not all those nominated. We wish to give all nominees the opportunity to be nominated in future years. We know that some nominees will not put their names forward a second time if they have been publicly nominated and honoured at our Awards Luncheon.
The CBABC WLF Debra Van Ginkel, QC Mentoring Award was presented to Brenda Edwards in recognition of her many years as a mentor in the CBABC WLF Mentoring Program and the University of Victoria Mentoring Program. The Award, designed by Debra's husband Murray Robinson, is a glass vase etched with two calla lilies representing Debra's favourite flowers that are entwined to represent the mentoring relationship.

The Debra Van Ginkel, QC Mentoring Award honours the memory and accomplishments of Debra Van Ginkel, QC, an extraordinary woman and member of the legal profession. Debra sincerely believed that all people, women lawyers especially, need a mentor to support and encourage them in their profession and their lives. Debra achieved her personal vision of a Mentoring Program to sustain women’s participation in the legal profession and enrich their careers in 2003 when the CBABC WLF Mentoring Program was instituted.
"The WLF's Second Annual Awards luncheon was an inspiring success. We were very pleased to present our first annual Mentoring Award named in honour of the founder of our Mentoring Program and Past Chair Debra Van Ginkel, QC. The recipient Brenda Edwards is an outstanding role model for the mentoring of women in the profession. Our Award of Excellence recipient Kathryn Berge, QC is also a distinguished lawyer who has worked for many years to promote the retention of women in the profession. We were also inspired by our guest speaker, Carole Taylor who spoke so eloquently about women and leadership. We hope this luncheon supports all women lawyers to make the changes they see needed to keep more women in the law." - Linda Robertson, Chair, CBABC Women Lawyers Forum
We wish to congratulate and honour the nominees for the CBABC WLF Award of Excellence and the CBABC WLF Debra Van Ginkel, QC Mentoring Award.
