NCBA Fourth Annual Nanaimo Battle of the Bar Bands
The Fourth Annual Battle of the Bar Bands hosted by the Nanaimo County Bar Association took place before a crowded room at the Queens Hotel in Nanaimo on Saturday, October 1, 2011. It was an incredible evening of rock and roll. The floorboards of the Queens Hotel rocked to the sounds of Blind Elmo, Victoria, Deiter and the Port O Call Boys, Vancouver, and Carpe Groovum and Halfcut, both from Nanaimo.

CBABC PD/Criminal Justice-Vancouver Seminar on Civility in the Criminal Bar: A Cautionary Tale 

On June 22, 2011, the British Columbia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association held a Professional Development Seminar in partnership with the Criminal Justice-Vancouver Section at the Law Courts Inn. The Honourable Mr. Justice David Watt of the Ontario Court of Appeal spoke on the importance of upholding Civility in the Criminal Bar.

On June 22, 2011, the British Columbia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association held a Professional Development Seminar in partnership with the Criminal Justice-Vancouver Section at the Law Courts Inn. The Honourable Mr. Justice David Watt of the Ontario Court of Appeal spoke on the importance of upholding Civility in the Criminal Bar.

CBABC/VBA 15th Annual Golf Tournament 2011
CBABC President Stephen McPhee and VBA President Sandra Kovacs hosted the 15th Annual Canadian Bar Association/Vancouver Bar Association Golf Tournament that was held on June 16, 2011. The tournament raised close to $10,000 in support of the Law Student Scholarships at UBC and UVIC. The golf tournament had 120 golfers and 130 people at the dinner.

CBABC Law Week in British Columbia
A public legal education program that provides an opportunity for young people and adults to become familiarized with the Canadian legal system. In celebration of Law Week, a number of events such as mock trials, citizenship ceremonies, courthouse tours and public speaking contests for high school students were held throughout British Columbia.

CBABC/VBA Sixth Annual Battle of the Bar Bands in Victoria
The Sixth Annual Victoria Battle of the Bar Bands is now just a warm memory for the 250 or so who attended the event on April 1, 2011. The event is organized each year by the Victoria Bar Association and the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association as a fundraiser for the CBA (BC) Benevolent Society. The event was once again a critical and financial success, raising about $10,000 for the Society.

CBABC Rural Education and Access to Lawyers Initiative Regional Networking Event
On March 12, 2011, the CBABC held a Rural Education and Access to Lawyers Regional Networking Event for all law students in British Columbia. This well-attended event offered law students with an opportunity to meet more than 100 members of the Bench and Bar.

CBABC Tenth Annual Battle of the Bar Bands in Vancouver
The CBABC Tenth Annual Battle of the Bar Bands took place before an enthusiastic and sold out crowd at the Commodore Ballroom on Friday, June 10, 2011. The event coincided with the Vancouver Canuck’s stunning victory over the Boston Bruin’s in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The competition was as fierce as it was at Roger’s Arena with seven well-seasoned veteran bands taking to the stage. The Winner of the coveted “ZSA Cup” for best band was Mike Mjanes’ “Standard of Hair.” First runner up was Pat Haberl’s “The Disclaimers” and second runner up was longtime seasoned veteran Howard Mickelson’s “Still Living At Home.”

CBABC Women Lawyers Forum Awards Luncheon
The CBABC Women Lawyers Forum (WLF) held an Awards Luncheon on February 25, 2011 in celebration of its eighth year of successfully promoting the stature and influence of women in the legal profession. The Honourable Associate Chief Justice Anne MacKenzie of the Supreme Court of British Columbia spoke on her career experiences. At the luncheon, Margaret Ostrowski, QC was presented with the CBABC WLF Award of Excellence and Joan Gordon was presented with the CBABC WLF Debra Van Ginkel, QC Mentoring Award.

CBABC Women Lawyers Forum Mentoring Program Orientation Luncheon
On February 18, 2011, the CBABC Women Lawyers Forum held a Mentoring Program Orientation Luncheon at the Law Courts Inn Restaurant. This well attended event provided an excellent opportunity for women lawyers to meet and learn about their roles as mentors and mentees.

Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Miaohui
On January 29 and 30, 2011, CBABC staff from the Lawyer Referral Service and Dial-A-Law programs participated in the celebration of Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Miaohui at the Executive Airport Plaza Hotel in Richmond, British Columbia. The CBABC booth provided information and brochures on both programs to members of the public.
