CBABC Annual Breast Cancer Bake and Raffle
Congratulations to CBABC staff, who raised a record-breaking $1,248.84 at the CBABC Annual Breast Cancer Bake Sale and Raffle held on October 9, 2009. 100% of the funds raised go directly to the Breast Cancer Society in support of the Research for a Cure Fund.

CBABC/LSBC Bench and Bar Dinner - Vancouver
More than 350 members of the Bench and Bar attended the 25th Annual Bench and Bar Dinner on November 4, 2009 in Vancouver. The event was co-hosted by Mr. James M. Bond, President of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch and Mr. Gordon Turriff, QC, President of the Law Society of British Columbia. Special guests included His Honour the Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Chief Justice Lance Finch, Attorney General Michael de Jong, Chief Justice Robert Bauman, and Associate Chief Judge Gurmail Gill.

CBABC Law Week in British Columbia
A public legal education program that provides an opportunity for young people and adults to become familiarized with the Canadian legal system. In celebration of Law Week, a number of events such as mock trials, free legal classes, citizenship ceremonies, courthouse tours, public speaking contests and essay contests for high school students were held throughout British Columbia.

CBABC Second Annual Work Life Balance Award
The CBABC Second Annual Work Life Balance Award Luncheon was held on June 25, 2009 at the Sutton Place Hotel. The CBABC Second Annual Work Life Balance Award was presented by former Attorney General Wally Oppal, QC to Pushor Mitchell LLP in recognition of their leadership in promoting work life balance within the practice of law.

CBABC/UBC Faculty of Law Mentoring Reception
On October 22, 2009, the CBABC held the CBABC/UBC Faculty of Law Mentoring Reception in Vancouver, British Columbia. The evening was moderated by the CBABC student representative Joanna Dawson. Dean Mary Anne Bobinski spoke on behalf of the UBC Faculty of Law about the importance of the mentoring process to the students.

CBABC/UVic Faculty of Law Mentoring Reception
On October 21, 2009, the CBABC held the CBABC/UVic Faculty of Law Mentoring Reception in Victoria, British Columbia. CBABC Young Lawyers' Representative Kerry Simmons presented the $4,000 CBA Entrance Scholarship to Suzanne Harkness. CBABC Past President John Waddell, QC presented the $500 CBA Financial Services Corporation Law School Achievement Award to Rebecca Crookshanks.

CBABC Eighth Annual Battle of the Bar Bands
The CBABC 8th Annual Battle of the Bar Bands took place before a sold out crowd at the Commodore Ballroom on Friday, June 12, 2009. The competition was particularly fierce this year as all eight of the participating bands came well-rehearsed and nursing apparent grudges against the other bands. This year's stable of bands consisted of Blind Elmo (winners of the 2009 Victoria Battle of the Bar Bands); The Suits; Suspended Sentence; The Retainers; The Noted Uppers; QC and the Moonshine Band; Mr Fancy Education; and No Reply.

CBABC/VBA 13th Annual Golf Tournament
The 13th Annual Canadian Bar Association/Vancouver Bar Association Golf Tournament held on June 18, 2009 raised approximately $6,000 in support of the Law Student Awards Fund. After many bogies, pars and an eagle or two, golfers headed for the “19th Hole” and a delicious buffet dinner and slide show featuring the golfers.

CBABC Women Lawyers Forum Awards Luncheon
The CBABC Women Lawyers Forum (WLF) held an Awards Luncheon on November 17, 2009 in celebration of its seventh year of successfully promoting the stature and influence of women in the legal profession. Former Minister of Finance Carole Taylor, OC spoke on women and leadership. At the luncheon, Kathryn Berge, QC was presented with the CBABC WLF Award of Excellence and Brenda Edwards was presented with the CBABC WLF Debra Van Ginkel, QC Mentoring Award.

CBABC Work Life Balance Series
The CBABC Work Life Balance Committee hosted a series of panel presentations, featuring experts who provided insight and recommendations for achieving greater balance in our professional lives. Attracting the best talent calls for more than just a good financial package and stimulating work. More than ever, law firms are looking for best practices and solutions that enable them to recruit and retain the best and brightest legal professionals.

Kelowna Battle of the Bar Bands
The Kelowna Bar Association hosted the Inaugral Kelowna Battle of the Bar Bands on February 12, 2009 at the Minstrel Cafe in Kelowna. The bands consisted of Blaine Weststrate's Blunt, Kevin Kingston's Jamshack, Robert Levin's Rewind and Bill Clarke's Rock 'n' Horse. It was an incredible evening of rock and roll.

NCBA Second Annual Nanaimo Battle of the Bar Bands
The Second Annual Battle of the Bar Bands hosted by the Nanaimo County Bar Association took place before a sold out crowd at the Queens Hotel in Nanaimo on Saturday, October 17, 2009. It was an incredible evening of rock and roll. The floorboards of the Queens Hotel rocked to the sounds of Blind Elmo, Reverbs, Carpe Grovum, shed, and QC and the Moonshine Band.
