Demystifying the Justice System
Law Day offers a free, fun, activity-filled day for those curious about the Alberta legal system
Edmonton, Alberta … Wouldn’t it be interesting to have the court process explained in an informal, entertaining setting? Have you ever been curious of what goes on inside the Edmonton Law Courts? Edmonton Law Courts Building (1A Sir Winston Churchill Sq) opens its doors to Edmontonians for Law Day on Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 9:45 am to 3:30 pm.
The 29th annual Law Day is a free, family-friendly event that promotes access to justice and introduces the general public to key participants in the judicial system including members of the police service, lawyers and judges.
Law day 2011 activities include:
· Mock Trials put on by practicing lawyers and local judges: These demonstrations include a special Children’s Trial “Goldilocks and the three bears”, Civil Trial “The Circus Mix-up”, Criminal Trial “The Boy is Mine”, plus a French and Civil Trial.
· Centre for Constitutional Studies Moot – Is there a reasonable expectation of privacy in garbage?
· “Ask a Lawyer” – Visit our booth for basic information on subjects such as divorce, child support, wills & estates, and more!
· Court House Tours – See inside the holding cells, view the super courtroom, and have an opportunity to ask questions about Alberta’s court system.
· Share the excitement as 50 new Canadians are sworn in at the Citizenship Court
· High School Mock tournament – “Her Majesty The Queen v. Alex Sebastian”
· Plus over 30 law-related booths and exhibits
