Ever wondered what goes on at the Lethbridge Courthouse? Is it just like "Law & Order" on TV? Find out during a special open house aimed at increasing public awareness and fostering a better understanding of the Canadian justice system.
Law Day is set forApril 28 and the Lethbridge Courthouse will open its doors to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to this fun, family-friendly event, is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Activities include a citizenship court where 80 new Canadians will be sworn in, tours of the courthouse, K9 demonstrations, a crime sceneinvestigation demonstration, kids' corner, static displays and a high school mock trial competition.
In addition, visitors can check out the fairy tale trial and decide for themselves whether Gargamel is guilty or not-guilty of theft under $5,000 and pretending to practise witchcraft. Gargamel, who is known to be the sworn enemy of the Smurfs and has spent years trying to capture them, was arrested for stealing a lock of Smurfette's hair to use in his potion. Sources close to the case have confirmed that Gargamel will argue he is a real wizard and therefore innocent of pretending to practice witchcraft.
This year the public will also have an opportunity to seek free legal advice. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. volunteers from Lethbridge Legal Guidance and Pro Bono Law Alberta will be available to speak with citizens about their legal problems and provide information about their options and how to proceed. Anyone interested in a half-hour session with a lawyer must pre-register by calling Lethbridge Legal Guidance at 403-380-6338.
Law Day events are organized by the Canadian Bar Association in partnership with the Alberta Law Foundation and Law Society of Alberta, and take place annually throughout the province.
