Centre for Constitutional Studies Trial: “Polly Want A Lawyer?”
(1:15 p.m.)

Two lawyers will debate whether Polly was properly advised of his/her right to a lawyer. Come see what happens when Polly goes to the Court of Appeal! Will Polly be set free? This is an appeal of the above Criminal Trial.

High School Mock Trial Competition: “Her Majesty The Queen v. Justin(e) Pieber” (10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

The Edmonton Law Day Committee of the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch, and the Alberta Debate and Speech Association are pleased to announce that Judge Janet D. Franklin of the Family and Youth Division of the Provincial Court of Alberta has once again donated the sum of $750.00 as prize money for the High School Mock Trial Competition conducted on Law Day, Saturday April 21st, 2012, at the Law Courts Building in Edmonton.  Judge Franklin, a long time supporter of the competition, hopes her donation will prompt some of her judicial colleagues to support Law Day events by donating prize money or otherwise becoming active in Law Day events.  Judge Franklin's donation will enable the Alberta Debate and Speech Association to provide prizes of $350.00, $250.00 and $150.00 respectively to the gold, silver and bronze medal winning teams.  The High School Mock Trial Competition has been part of the Law Day activities at the Law Courts Building for several years.  This year 10 teams of bright and enthusiastic high school students will compete in a criminal law mock trial, Regina v. Justine(e) PIEBER, where the accused faces a charge of possession of a loaded handgun with a minimum sentence of 3 years imprisonment if convicted.  Members of the public are welcome to view the mock trials with preliminary rounds starting at 10:15 am and at noon and the medal rounds starting at 2:00 pm on the 4th floor of the Law Courts Building.

During this tour, you will see the super courtroom and will be able to see where your Alberta sheriffs work behind the scenes in the court house. Once there, you will have an opportunity to see the inner workings of the cell block as well as a collection of confiscated items which people have attempted to bring into the court house. Warning!
